What the 17 characters actually mean
A Vehicle Identification Number isn't random. It splits into three blocks that together describe who built your car and how.
World Manufacturer Identifier
Identifies the maker and country of origin. "WBA", for example, marks a passenger BMW built in Germany.
Vehicle Descriptor
Describes model, body style, engine and restraints — and includes a check digit that validates the whole VIN.
Vehicle Identifier
The car's fingerprint: model year, assembly plant and the unique serial number for that individual vehicle.
