What the 17 characters actually mean

A Vehicle Identification Number isn't random. It splits into three blocks that together describe who built your car and how.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is VinSpecify really free?

Yes. Decoding a VIN here costs nothing and never asks you to create an account. Enter the number and read your report.

Where do I find my VIN?

The most common spots are the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side, the sticker inside the driver's door jamb, and your registration or insurance documents.

What information will I get?

Your report covers year, make, model and trim, plus engine and drivetrain details, body style and manufacturing origin — everything encoded in the VIN itself.

Is my search private?

We don't tie your lookups to a profile, and you never have to sign in to use the decoder. Enter a VIN, get your answer, done.

What is a check digit?

The 9th character is a math-based safeguard calculated from the other 16. A single typo usually makes it fail — a quick way to catch mistakes.
